You can post your date of travel with contact details and May be you can find travel companions for sharing your expenses.

Hi Moinak,

Feb is a fantastic time to come to Sikkim and Darjeeling.
It's cold though...

Best way forward is actually to take a SUV reserved @ Rs 2,500.00 per day as you'll be able to stop and pause as you like....
Alternately , you get share taxi's from Gangtok too to North Sikkim.
Do expect road block due to the recent earthquake.

If you ask me , Darjeeling and Kalimpong make a safer bet.

warmest Himalayan regards,
Siddarth

Hi Vishnu,

Thanks for your warm welcome....

I'm always ready to provide the right information as i want people travelling to remote areas make informed decisions.I also do a lot of research before embarking on a tour. It's a part of travel nowadays with limited resources (of time )and the variety of options one has to choose from.

I'm a tourism consultant for the Himalayas and my areas of expertise are in Ladakh , Sikkim ,Darjeeling , Uttrakhand and Himachal Pradesh areas.
We do mostly private journeys for FITs but also accommodate GIT's lately.
Our new focus market segment is school and college groups who come to the Himalayas for "edu-tainment."

Our tours focuses a lot of the geo-political , socio-economical , cultural and spiritual side of a local area.We combine the worlds of living cultures of music, education, art and dance forms.

More generic info can be obtained from our webpage: www.9mantra.com

I also provide consultancy to mostly eco-initiatives and heritage projects (guided walks, conservation , conferences, etc) and also am in soft skill training for mountain guides, tour escorts and tourist drivers etc.I'm a lecturer on tourism and travel management also.

SO in short , yes , i will endeavor to assist anyone who has a query for the Himalayas.Being a local from Darjeeling, i will always have a bias to my hometown and region though....hahahah.....

warmest Himalayan regards to u and to your team at Thinking Particles,

Happy New Year 2012.

Siddarth,
That's a tempting job you are into...pretty fascinating to me... Himalayas are my favorite destination in India.... However I am yet to devote a dedicated year or so in exploring this majestic mountain range. I have traveled a bit here and there but not extensively... I can understand how important it is to get a local advice while trekking Himalayas. I had been to  Darjeeling couple of times and hoping again to make it there soon...I love sikkim though i could not make to Cholamu lake (Topping my wish-list)...

Thinking Particle is not a big team... we are just two guys ( Vijay and I) maintaining entire site from coding, testing, bug fixing, article writing, travel photography etc...

Well...We will keep in touch....  :)

Hi Siddath,
There are many queries on our thread about Gangtok travel where people ask about the current weather situation and road conditions. I believe that you will be the best person for answering those queries. Will really appreciate if you can participate in that thread.

Hi SKH,
July is the monsoon time so you may witness heavy downpour in the foot hills of Himalayas and near Gangtok... However for trekking and camping activities, you need to head to West Sikkim... You can try Sandakphu Trek & The Goecha La trek... Solo-trekking is generally not recommended so you need to first find a fellow traveler... It's a good start...

Hi Deep... How many days you have in hand ?.. are you looking to do week long treks ?

Getting permits is not a big deal...you can easily procure it while in Gangtok... you will have to submit copies of an ID card (Passport, Voter ID) and photographs...

Budget of the trip will entire depend on the nature of your travel style... there are all sort of possibilities to cut down travel expenses..

Hi Deep... Sikkim is fine to travel through the year except Monsoons (June to August Mid)....

Sikkim gets crowded during Durga Puja holidays and in the month of April, May..

20 days are good enough for a comprehensive tour to Sikkim along with a short trip to Kaziranga National Park..

In Sikkim, you can get a room as low as 200-250 INR per night.. local food is also not very expensive... Except North Sikkim, most of the stretches can be done on public transport..

you can take flight to Siliguri or Train.... you can prefer to take flight for your return journey from Guwahati...

YES, Kaziranga is best visited before April end.. May would be start of monsoon and National park might get closed..

let me know if i can help you further...

Hi Deep... November is one of the best seasons to travel in sikkim.. weather will be pleasant and all the routes should be open.. Here is a draft version of the itinerary which you can follow for your tour.

Gangtok (2 nights): One day tour to Nathula pass, Changu lake etc
North Sikkm (3 nights): Gurudongmar lake, Yumthang valley, Zero point, Katao etc.
West Sikkim (2 nights): Pelling, Rabong, Yuksom etc.
you can spend couple of more days around Darjeeling and all.

Siliguri to Guwahati would take 7-8 hours i guess... From Guwahati, Kaziranga is another 5-6 hours journey...so it will take another 2-3 days from Siliguri..

Hopefully this information will help you drafting a plan..

Regards
Vishnu Kumar

Hi Kedar,

Seems like you have done some research before outlining this itinerary... Your itinerary looks OK and completely do-able...

Here is my answer on your queries...

1) One day is not enough for sight seeing in Kolkata however you can take a quick glimpse of the city...

2) Cost will be very difficult to determine as it largely depend on travel style.. For the group of 14 people, I think you need to hire 2 vehicles (Scorpio sort of).

3) I would suggest local sightseeing on Day 1 (26th) and visit Nathula on next day (27th). Nathula tour can be booked by any tour agent at MG road, Gangtok. Similarly North Sikkim tour (Lachung, Yumthang) etc also be arrange by tour agent at MG road.. Hotels are generally part of the package offered by these tour agents..

4) you can either carry your luggage or can leave your luggage at hotel in Gangtok..

5) Standard cost of North Sikkim tour (Lachen, Gurudongmar lake, Lachung, Yumthang, Zero Point) is 16000-18000 INR for 5-6 people and one vehicle...

6) Nathula pass and Gurudongmar lake (not the part of your itinerary) are at relatively higher altitude where there are chances to get hit by AMS. Road to North Sikkim is curvy and similarly to Nathula.

More information on acute mountain sickness

http://thinkingparticle.com/forum/frequently-asked-questions-acute-mountain-sickness

7) Won't make much difference.. you can cover namchi before going to Darjeeling..

8) though nothing striking there but Mirik lake is worth a detour...

September is ideal to visit Sikkim... It wont be very cold and almost beginning of Autumn....

Getting hotels on arrival will not be a problem. For your convenience you can book in advance..

Cheers
Vishnu Kumar
